What Are the Categories of Waterproofing?
Every waterproofing job starts with the same question, and it’s the one most homeowners skip: which system actually suits this surface? Liquid rubber, bituminous membranes, cementitious coatings, and sheet membranes all stop water, but they do it differently, they fail differently, and using the wrong one is one of the most common reasons a “waterproofed” roof leaks again within two years.
The Four Main Categories
1. Liquid Rubber (Cold-Applied Membrane)
Liquid rubber is applied by brush, roller, or spray directly onto the surface, curing into a single, fully bonded, seamless membrane. Because it’s cold-applied (no flame, no heat welding), it can go over almost any substrate: concrete, metal, asbestos, tile, even irregular shapes like box gutters and pipe penetrations that other systems struggle to seal cleanly.
Its biggest advantage is elasticity. A good liquid rubber system stretches up to 800% without cracking, so it moves with the building through thermal expansion instead of fighting it. There are no seams or overlaps for water to find, which is the single most common failure point in every other category on this list.
2. Bituminous Waterproofing
Bitumen-based systems, including torch-on felt, pour-and-roll, and modified bitumen sheets, have been used for decades and remain common on flat concrete roofs. They’re durable and relatively inexpensive per square metre, but installation involves heat (torch-applied) or solvents, and the sheets are joined with overlapping seams that need to be sealed perfectly. Every seam is a future risk. On roofs with complex geometry, such as multiple penetrations, changes in level, or box gutters, bituminous systems are harder to install without leaving a weak point somewhere.
3. Cementitious Waterproofing
A cement-based slurry, brushed or sprayed onto masonry and concrete, that bonds chemically with the substrate. It’s rigid rather than elastic, which makes it well suited to below-ground applications like retaining walls, water tanks, and basements where there’s little thermal movement to accommodate. On an exposed roof subject to daily heating and cooling, that same rigidity becomes a liability: cementitious coatings are prone to hairline cracking over time as the structure beneath it expands and contracts.
4. Sheet Membrane Waterproofing
Pre-manufactured membrane sheets, either self-adhesive or mechanically fixed, rolled out and joined at the seams. Quality control happens at the factory rather than on site, which gives more consistent membrane thickness than some liquid or spray systems. The tradeoff is the same one bituminous systems face: every seam and overlap is a potential entry point, and sheet membranes don’t handle irregular shapes, corners, or multiple penetrations as cleanly as a system that’s applied wet and cures into one continuous surface.
